Outdoor Research Virtuoso Hooded Down Jacket - Women's

You might get cold in the Sierras unless you are geared up in the Women’s Virtuoso Down Jacket from Outdoor Research. The 650-fill down holds body heat in so you stay nice and toasty, and you can seal out cold air by cinching the dual hem drawcord and tightening the hook-and-loop cuff tabs. The entire jacket compresses into one of the hand pockets so you have a compact, packable jacket that doubles as a down-filled pillow when sleepy time comes around.

  • Pertex Endurance fabric on the shoulders and arms creates a protective roof that keeps moisture off easily soaked areas
  • Fully insulated hood is adjustable and fits easily over a helmet
  • Articulated elbows make movement easier so you keep full range of motion even though you are bundled up big-time
  • The ultralight 20D ripstop shell is made from recycled materials to save resources and ease stress on the environment

Generally I'm a size Large. According to the OR size chart, I should be a size large. I think a Medium would have been a better choice. I understand the desire for room to layer, but it was too huge throughout the hips, waist and shoulders. Also, the lighter red material is translucent and the color variations of the down filling make it appear dirty/stained. The draw string that horizontally runs through the hood synches uncomfortably into your head at ear level. The fit is also very boxy. Other than that, well made, warm and lightweight.

I bought the 2008 version of this jacket from this site. It was a fantastic jacket and kept me warm through 3 Wisconsin winters. I used it as my daily commuting jacket and as my downhill skiing jacket on the extra cold days. I am pretty cold natured but still have to leave this jacket unzipped until it is below 20 or so degrees. Unfortunately, it fell off of a coat hook at work and somebody opened the door on top of it, ripping a hole in the sleeve. Wish I had a more epic tale than that, but anyway, I called OR to see what I could do about all the down falling out and one week later I am the proud owner of a brand new version of my jacket! They completely stood behind their product. The only charge was the cost of shipping my old jacket in to OR ($10). The new version is lighter in weight and not as bulky, but seems just as warm. The fabric is also softer. I like that it folds up into it's own pocket and I like the new design of the hood which would still fit around a helmet, but doesn't seem quite as big or look as goofy as the old version. I was delighted with this coat before, and now it is even better. I am also completely loyal to OR now that I have found their customer service to be so fantastic.
